Day 61. Another Rainy Zero. January 2, 2016.
I didn’t sleep that well in the top bunk without railings. I woke up to rain. I’m not in a hurry and I’m not walking out of town in the rain. The hostel I’m in is full tonight. So is every other place in Picton. I spent the morning catching up on my blog. Yay! It’s up to date.
It stopped raining so I walked around town. The worst rated hostel in town said they might have a bed but wouldn’t know til 2pm. So I hung around thinking of how I need something good to happen. It always works out, right? I should have stayed at Hurricane’s.
Blenheim is 30 km south of Picton. The popularity of sauvignon blanc has made it flourish. It’s also cherry season. Lots of young foreign workers stay here to earn money. One hostel had one bed open. I asked if it was a top bunk. Of course it was. Then she said there was a share room for 4. No one would be in it but me. Same price of NZ $22. I’ll take it. Things were looking up. I thought I would take the bus but there wasn’t one til 6:30. So I hitched. Janet and Dave, from Melbourne, were on their way to Nelson….. the opposite direction. They rented a 9 passenger van because there were no cars. I could go to Nelson. After less than a minute they were driving me to Blenheim. Awesome! They stopped to pick up another couple. Earlier in the day I had met Justin and Pauline from Germany. Jana who I met on day 3 had told them about me. They are also walking the TA and didn’t have anyplace to stay tonight. I told them about my 4 person room. So now we are in the same room and out of the rain.
Now I am at the Copper Beech Hostel in Blenheim…. in a bottom bunk. It’s great. I got 500MB of wifi free and a towel because I am walking the TA. Things really do always work out. It is supposed to rain more tomorrow and this place is fully booked. Hmm. I wonder what will happen. Enough of the zeros. I am ready to walk.
are you doing the queen charlotte? there are hostels along that trail.
Thanks. They are fully booked. Too many people!
Just starting to plan a walking trip like yrs. I’m a kiwi living in WAustralia. Very inspired by yr blog, scary reminder of wet NZπ₯

Hi, Why Not!
I continue to marvel at your up-beat spirit; you really know how to take everything in stride! We’re getting another GOOD rainstorm in your hometown! Nice, too: Skiing is in full swing at Mt. Shasta! I was the oldest (80!) for the Polar Bear Plunge…and the water temp was 48 degrees! Have some epic bkpk trips scheduled with Mike and Chris this summer. It would be great to have you join us for one! Most scenic will be to Emerald and Sapphire Lakes! That’s it for now! HNY! TarpMan
