Goodbye Casara Mesa

Nathan worked out a rather complicated slack pack plan. Hitch from Te Kuiti to the DOC Pureora cabins. Try to get a cabin since we hadn’t been able to reach them by phone. Drop our packs. Hitch back to where we had all left off. Slack pack back to the cabin. Easy. Not!

There wasn’t much traffic so it was hard to hitch. The cabins are 4 km off the highway and there was no traffic on this road so we got to walk it 3 times. Nathan, Nils and I finally started making forward progress at 1pm.  It was nice roads without traffic and we were able to do solid 6 km per hour. Road walking isn’t always nice but sometimes it is wonderful to be able to briskly walk and not concentrate on each step.

We were back at the cabins at 6:30. Alex and Helen had gotten there earlier and found the person in charge of the cabins and got us one.  We just got inside and it started raining.

It was fun making dinner and talking and sitting. The hot showers were heavenly.
