Started hiking at 5:30 and got to see a gorgeous sunrise over Mt Shasta. 

In the afternoon thunder boomed for over an hour. When I got to Payne Lake, 6 miles from the road to Etna, it started raining hard, then turned to hail. So much for the swimming I was hoping to do. I got to the road at 6:15 and got the lucky immediate hitch I was hoping for. I even got to shower before I headed over to the brew pub. Kimchi and Twigg were there and soon Atlas too. The porter was a great reward for the effort of getting there in time. Back at the Hiker Hut were Will (now Ed the Duck) and John.
