Day 59 – Muir Pass
5/31/14
22 miles
856 total miles
After not seeing anyone for the last couple days it was nice to see other hikers today. A couple miles in this morning we stopped at a camp that had 9 hikers. Some were still there. Tarzan, Ass Wagon, White Water, Legs, Nature and 2 JMT hikers.
We timed the snow over Muir Pass perfectly. A slight crunch but hard until we were mostly out of it on the north side. It’s so much easier to walk when you are not post holing every step.
At the top there is a stone hut. I told the others than in 2009 Jellybean had climbed up to the top. I volunteered to take a picture for anyone who climbed up. White Water and Legs went for it. I told them Jellybean had stood on top. They sat. Still impressive and I wasn’t tempted at all.
Today’s lunch spot was the best of the trip. Huge granite slab at the end of Evolution Lake looking back at the pass we just climbed down. Perfect temperature. Hard to get moving again.
Near the end of the day we caught up to Gearslut and Turkey Feathers. They showed us some wild onions which we picked and had with dinner.
22 miles and quit hiking at 6. Great day.
Memories of the JMT and the JM hut I slept in during my 1980 trek! It does my heart good to see others enjoying. Keep going Why Not! Joyce
Thank you.
