For the fifth year (’09, ’10, ’11, ’12 and now ’14) I’ve attended the Annual Day Zero Pacific Crest Trail Kick Off. ADZPCTKO. That’s a mouth full to say. I had fun running into many trail legends and trail buddies. Vendors had all the latest gear on display and of course I had to check it all out. About 800 people were there.

It rained Friday night and off and on during the day on Saturday. It was cold and wet enough that I kept running back to my tent or to the cafe a short walk from the park. 

Thanks to the organizers for another top notch event.

Mad Monte, on the left, hiked the trail in 1977 and is planning a 40 year anniversary hike in 3 years. Teddi Boston is on the right. In 1976 she was the first solo woman to hike the PCT.  She still holds the record for the earliest (May 1st) start for a successful southbound hike. She is now 87 and just hiked from the Mexican border to Cajon Pass…. the same distance we have hiked. Just an amazing and inspirational woman. I have met her before and made sure my hiking partners got to meet her.
