Day 45. River Day 5. Whanganui – The City and End of the River Trip. December 17, 2015.

Paddle 44.5 km + walk 5 km.
Downes Hut km 1325.5 to Top 10 Holiday Park Whanganui km 1370 then walk to Whanganui City km 1375

Sleep at the Downes Hut was great.
We paddled through slowly moving water til lunch. Since we are now close to the ocean tidal flow became a consideration. It was slack water when we stopped for lunch. The water rose at least a meter while we ate. We started back out at high tide and increasing wind. The final 10 km into a head wind made me more than ready to end this canoe trip.

At the Holiday Park we dropped off the canoes, filled our  packs and walked out. Nils had stayed at a great hostel here, they had room so we all walked there….. German owned and operated College House. We walked down to Domino’s Pizza for dinner. The sunset made the walk worth it.

I took no photos all day. I guess I really was ready to stop paddling.
