Alaska – Day 5 – 6/30/15

I have 24 hours in Juneau starting at 7am.

Beautiful morning

Mendenhall Glacier

I hiked up to the top of Gastineau Peak. 3666 ft in 3 miles.  I love these hikes you can do right from town.  They have been plenty hard too. I was rewarded with gorgeous views in all directions.

A 3X lens can only do so much.

A tram takes lazy people about half way up (or down).  On my way down I stopped and asked how much a one way ticket was.  $10 or buy $10 of food or drink in the restaurant and just show your receipt.  That was an easy decision.  I had my first beer of the trip and decided to be lazy.

Nice to read your daily blogs. I’m currently reading A Wolf Called Romeo who spent 7 years interacting with people on/near the Mendenhall Glacier-great book!

Did you ever read the book “Dirty Work?” It’s written by a lady who worked on trail teams, was a trail boss in Idaho or Montana and latter in Alaska. Good book. Heard Alaska has numerous wildfires going on.

I still have not read it. But it is on my Kindle app on my phone. I might read it up here if I get extra down time. Bummer about the fires. I am hoping they are out by the time I get to Denali. Doubtful tho.
